Description:
The Rapid Aerostat Initial Deployment (RAID) is an infrared sensor package integrated into an aerostat or another stationary platform (tower) aimed at detecting movement of hostile ground forces and equipment at great distances. This capability enables United States armed forces to respond rapidly to any threatening situation.
Raytheon was awarded a $48.4 million contract 21 June 2005 for 41 RAID systems along with systems engineering and life cycle support to be delivered between July 2005 and April 2006. This was the second such contract awarded to Raytheon for the RAID system by the US Army which first ordered the system to support operations in Iraq (2003) and Afghanistan (2001).
On 8 September 2005, the US Army awarded Raytheon a $17 million contract to provide additional 15 RAID systems to monitor weapons storage sites as part of operation Eagle Eye. RAID deliveries to the US Army were planed to begin in October 2005 and ending in January 2006.
