Description:
The Akash, Sky in English, is a mobile, medium range, air defense system being developed by India as a replacement for its Soviet-made Kub/SA-6 Gainful weapon systems under Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme (IGMDP). The new air defense system has been developed to deal with multiple incoming threats simultaneously and to seamlessly act in network centric operations. The missile system has been optimized to shoot down a wide range of air-breathing threats such as fixed- and rotary-wing aircraft and unmanned air vehicles (UAVs). The Akash air defense systems will be deployed by the Indian Army and the Indian Air Force along with India's Russian-made S-300/SA-10 Grumble long-range air defenses.
The Akash weapon system key elements are the Rajendra surveillance and target acquisition radar and the ramp-mounted Akash surface-to-air missile (SAM) which features a maximum range of over 30 kilometers. Each launcher vehicles can carry as many as three Akash SAMs. These elements are mounted on BMP-1 tracked chassis. India may seek a further development of the air defense system to extend its weapon range and to counter ballistic missile threats. The Akash was completing operational evaluation by the Indian Ministry of Defense at the end of 2007 with series production due to start thereafter.
