Description: The Morfey, also Morfei, is an advanced short-range air defense system being designed by the Almaz-Antey concern for the Armed Forces of Russia since 2007. It should be targeted at countering the latest generation of fighter aircraft, helicopters, cruise missiles, guided bombs, supersonic missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). The new air defense system is expected to achieve initial operational capability by 2015 protecting military installations. The Morfey could be equipped with the new surface-to-air missile (SAM) 9M100 which has an estimated range in excess of 10 kilometers. The dome shaped radar antenna provides a 360-degree coverage. In August 2011, a Russian press report stated that this short-range missile system has an effective range of only five kilometers.
