Description:
The Type 03 is a medium-range surface-to-air missile (SAM) system developed by Mitsubishi Electric as the replacement for obsolete Hawk air defense systems within the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF). The Type 03 air defense system consists of surveillance, target acquisition and fire control radar, command unit, vehicle-mounted missile launch units, communications equipment and transportation vehicles. The launch units are mounted on wheeled chassis and equipped with one six-cell vertical missile launcher. The Type 03 components are connected through a wireless network.
The Type 03 is intended for use by JGSDF anti-aircraft artillery units providing wide area air defense in support of regional and division levels against airborne threats. Little is known about the performance of Type 03 SAM weapon system but it is deemed as a huge leap forward in comparison to the Hawk missile system.
