Description: The R-27 is a medium/long range air-to-air missile designed for Soviet air defense aircraft. It features a modular design architecture to accommodate different seekers and propulsion systems for extended range. Some assessments suggest that the R-27 missile is the Soviet counterpart to the US AIM-7M Sparrow.

The R-27RE is a semi-active radar guided missile with an improved propulsion system for long range air-to-air engagements. Some sources suggest that the long range R-27RE was intended to attack US AWACS aircraft.
