Description:
BAE Systems' AN/ALQ-221 Advanced Defensive System (ADS) is an integrated state-of-the-art radar warning receiver (RWR) and electronic countermeasure system (ECM) that provides fixed-wing aircraft pilots with situational awareness and self-protection against current and emerging complex threats. The system production development began in 2004 at BAE Systems facility in Nashua, New Hampshire. The US Air Force funded its development in support of Block 20 U-2S modernization program which integrates the ALQ-221 along with upgraded avionics processor and multifunction cockpit displays.
The US Air Force cleared the AN/ALQ-221 for operational use on the U-2S Dragon Lady (Block 20) high altitude Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) aircraft in October 2005. Since then the system was ready for deployment in operational missions flying at altitudes greater than 70,000-ft (21,000+ meters) which poses the real challenge for this protection system.
