Description: Affordable Adaptable Conformal Electronically Scanned Antenna Radar (AACER) program was launched by DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) in summer 2004. The program scope is to develop an extended range ground moving target indication (GMTI) radar combined with a high resolution synthetic aperture radar (SAR) and integrated communications capabilities. The AACER system will be used on tactical level Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) such as US Army's Future Combat Systems (FCS) Class IV UAV and the A-160 Hummingbird.

The AACER radar system will provide unprecedented, high update rates for tracked targets, and persistent stare over large areas with high update rates. The final system will provide the US Army with an enhanced GMTI/SAR systems for reconnaissance, surveillance, target acquisition and tracking missions. The US Army, and eventually the US Marine Corps and special operations forces, will gain such capability by 2010.

During the 12-month AACER program phase I, Northrop-Grumman and Raytheon will demonstrate key electronic scanning antenna technology and develop preliminary designs for each radar concept. In phase II, DARPA will select a single contractor to conduct a system design and build key sub-assemblies that meet form and factors for the Class IV UAV, a RQ-8 Fire Scout variant. During phase III, the program will focus on final system integration and flight test demonstration.
