Description: Northrop Grumman AN/APY-3 is a side looking phased array multimode radar used on the E-8 ground surveillance aircraft. Actually the APY-3 is the heart of the E-8 surveillance system. Mounted beneath the forward fuselage provides detection of ground targets at 175 kilometers using its synthetic aperture radar mode. The pulse Doppler mode allows to detect and track moving targets on the ground. The APY-3 sensor is able to cover one million square kilometers during an E-8 eight-hour sortie.
