Description:
The General Atomics AN/APY-8 Lynx is a high-resolution, all-weather, Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR), Ground Moving Target Indicator (GMTI) radar system. It produces photographic-like radar images with maximum resolution of 4-inch (approx. 10cm) with the SAR spotlight mode, and tracks ground moving targets using the GMTI mode.
The Lynx radar system has been integrated into the Predator and I-Gnat UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) systems and is also suitable for many manned airborne platforms due to its lightweight design.
The Lynx radar system operates in Ku-band an explores ranges of 47nm (87km) at 3m resolution, 29nm (54km) at 30cm resolution in stripmap mode. Using the spotlight mode the Lynx covers 21nm (39km) at 10cm resolution. These figures depend strongly on weather conditions.
In December 2003 the US Army awarded General Atomics a 24-month contract for system development and demonstration (SDD) of a variant of the Lynx radar system, dubbed the Lynx II. The new Lynx variant will feature lighter weight and improved reliability, maintainability, and diagnostics. In late 2005, the US Army will take delivery of 6 Lynx II radar systems.
