Description:
The Multi Platform Radar Technology Insertion Program (MP-RTIP) is a modular, active electronically scanned array radar system that can be scaled in size for integration on manned and unmanned airborne platforms. The MP-RTIP radar system will enable US and coalition forces to better detect, identify and track both moving and stationary ground vehicles and low-flying aircraft and cruise missiles.
The US Air Force plans to install the MP-RTIP modular radar system on the RQ-4B Global Hawk UAV and the E-10A Multi-Sensor Command and Control Aircraft (MC2A). MP-RTIP flight testing installed on a real Global Hawk is planned to begin in 2006-2007 timeline.
On April 30, 2004, the US Air Force awarded Northrop-Grumman a System Development and Demonstration (SDD) contract worth $880 million. The contract included two MP-RTIP wide area surveillance full demonstration units for the E-10A aircraft, one demonstration unit with some special features upgradeable to a full configuration baseline radar, and three MP-RTIP Global Hawk radars. The MP-RTIP development completion has been scheduled for May 2010.
In May 2006, the US Air Force announced that the MP-RTIP radar demonstrator was undergoing flight testing aboard the Proteus high-altitude aircraft at Hanscom Air Force Base, Massachusetts. The Proteus was testing the smaller version tailored for the Global Hawk UAV. This version is known as Global Hawk Block 40. The MP-RTIP larger version is known as the E-10 Wide Area Surveillance Sensor and is being developed for the E-10 ground surveillance aircraft. Global Hawk Block 40 sensor testing was scheduled to start in September 2006 and last for over a year. The first Global Hawk equipped with the MP-RTIP is scheduled to roll off the production line by 2011.
