Description: The RBE2 is an electronically scanned array radar designed to provide multi-function capabilities for the Rafale aircraft. It consists of 4 line replaceable units providing passive electronic scanning, high agility beam, ground mapping, fire control, and a fully programmable radar system. It will operate day/night, in all weather conditions as well as in severe electronic countermeasures (ECM) environments.

The RBE2 radar also provides terrain following and terrain avoidance capabilities. It tracks up to 40 airborne targets prioritizing 8 of them, it can engage up to 4 targets simultaneously. It achieved operational capability in 2002 onboard the Rafale M aircraft.

In April 2002, the French weaponry procurement agency (DGA) awarded Thales a contract to develop an active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar demonstrator based on the RBE2. In July 2004, DGA awarded a contract for the development of a second active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar demonstrator aimed at fielding this new technology on French Rafales beginning in 2012. The active antenna associated to AESA radar systems could be supplied to existing RBE2s.
