Description:
The Stand-Off Surveillance and Target Acquisition Radar (SOSTAR-X) is an active electronically steered array (AESA) designed to provide all-weather ground surveillance and targeting. The SOSTAR-X will be the basis for future European airborne ground surveillance and targeting platforms. It will operate in wide area ground moving target indicator (GMTI) and synthetic aperture radar (SAR) modes.
GMTI is worthwhile for scanning and tracking of ground movers and helicopters. High resolution spotlight SAR and swath SAR provide Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) imagery. Eventually, the critical information gathered by SOSTAR-X may be employed by military operators to conduct precision strikes.
The SOSTAR-X system achieved initial operational capability during 2005 with integration onto a test bed platform planned for early 2006. Fokker 100 test-bed aircraft maiden flight was scheduled for early 2006. In 2007 Fokker 100 SX equipped with SOSTAR-X payload is expected to conduct a demonstration campaign in France simulating a real scenario.
The SOSTAR GmbH Consortium - comprising Thales, EADS, FIAR, Fokker Space and Indra - is responsible for the development, integration and testing of this advanced sensor.
