Description:
The X-band Thin Radar Aperture (XTRA) is a radar antenna based on a revolutionary array technology that provides advanced sensor capabilities at low cost for both small manned and unmanned aircraft. The resulting XTRA sensor package is lighter and smaller than current equivalent systems installed on average size aircraft. This technology could be provided to a wide range of current and future fixed and rotary-wing aircraft.
The proof of concept contract which led to the XTRA development was awarded by the US Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) to Raytheon in April 2004. After Raytheon demonstrated the XTRA feasibility, AFRL exercised a contract option on January 25, 2005, covering production of a radar antenna for the Joint Unmanned Air Combat Systems (J-UCAS). The initial funding for this program was $4 million.
