Description: The Antonov An-178 is a twin-engine turbofan-powered freighter intended for both civil and military customers replacing the aging An-12 cargo airplane. The An-178 leverages Antonov expertise in the design, construction and operation of transport aircraft along with the most innovative aviation technologies. Equipped with digital avionics and glass cockpit, it will be able to carry a cargo of up to 18 tons. The An-178 aircraft program was unveiled at the Farnborough International Airshow in July 2012. The first prototype is expected to roll off the assembly line and perform its maiden flight in 2014. Antonov estimates that there is a potential demand for 400 An-178s worldwide.
It will carry cargo weighing up to 18-ton operating at the same airfields as the An-12 including unpaved ones. It has a more spacious, fully pressurized cargo compartment, where maritime containers and IATA containers can be placed. The An-178 can carry 99 soldiers, 80 paratroops or evacuate 70 sick and wounded persons. Other technical, operational and economic characteristics will be improved compared with the An-12 as well. In comparison with the An-12, its maximum cruising speed will be increased by 225 km/h, service ceiling by 3,000 m, and flight range with cargo of 10-ton will be increased by 800 km.
