Description: The Kinetic Energy Interceptor (KEI) is a mobile, land-based missile developed by a Northrop-Grumman/Raytheon team . It is in development and testing phase and should achieve operational status in the 2010-2012 timeframe. It is being designed to effectively intercept and destroy a ballistic missile during its boost/ascent phase of flight or within the first 250 seconds of ballistic flight.

The propulsion system will consist of a two-stage layout with the stage 1 motor being a solid-propellant rocket motor provided by ATK's Utah manufacturing site in Magna. Stage 2 motor will also be provided by ATK at its facility in Elkton, Maryland. According to current schedule, stage 2 motor will enter testing in 2005 and stage 1 motor in 2006.

The KEI interceptor will be deployed on both land and sea-based platforms. The C-17 Transportable land-based KEI comprises launch unit, HMMWV mounted BMCS, and satellite receivers for target acquisition through information provided by intelligence satellites.
