Description: The SSM-1, also known as Type 88 or Shibasuta, is a surface-to-surface anti-ship missile developed by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries based upon the Japan Air Self-Defense Force (JASDF) Type 80 (ASM-1) air-to-surface anti-ship missile. The ASM-1 missile was employed by the aging Mitsubishi F-1 jets. The SSM-1 missile has been designed for launch from either ships or ground-based platforms. Actually, the SSM-1 missile was developed on behalf of the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF).

The Japan Maritime Self Defense Force (JMSDF) also deployed its own version called the SSM-1B or Type 90 anti-ship missile on patrol boats. Both, SSM-1 and SSM-1B, feature the same guidance system which combines inertial navigation data and an active radar seeker in the terminal phase. The JGSDF has deployed the Type 88 missile for coastal defense integrated onto 6x6 trucks each carrying six missiles. The missile can engage sea targets at ranges between 12 to 100 kilometers.
