Description: The Centauro is a high mobility 8x8 wheeled armored combat vehicle family designed to perform a variety of missions. It was developed by Iveco Defense Vehicles, Consorzio IVECO Fiat-OTO Melara and OTO Melara for the Italian Army in the late 1980s. The first variant, the Centauro cavalry fighting vehicle, entered service in 1991. The second variant of Centauro introduced in 2009, known as Centauro 8x8 VBC or Centauro VBM, features add-on armor for increased protection, larger troops compartment and a turret-mounted 25mm cannon to serve as an infantry fighting vehicle (IFV). Other versions have been developed for air defense, field artillery and recovery and repair of damaged Centauros on the battlefield.
The basic Centauro is armed with a low-recoil 105mm 52-caliber main gun to perform as tank destroyer and two roof-mounted 7.62mm machine guns. The 105mm gun fires all 105mm NATO standard ammunition while stationary and on the move against both stationary and moving targets. The Centauro features hunter-killer capability against armored vehicles and Main Battle Tanks (MBTs) using the commander's panoramic sight and gunner's sight. The vehicle has a crew of four-man and carries four infantrymen internally in the rear compartment. It was deployed successfully for the first time during the humanitarian campaigns of Somalia and the former Yugoslavia in the 1990s.
The Italian Army ordered 400 Centauro armored reconnaissance vehicles with 105mm cannons and deliveries began in 1991. The Spanish Army has also purchased the Centauro to perform armored reconnaissance tasks while Brazil was considered for a long time a potential customer.
