Description: The Challenger is a derivative of the Chieftain main battle tank modified to produce the Shir for Iran. After Iran's 1979 revolution, the Shir project was taken over by the British Army a redesigned as the Challenger. The Challenger replaced the Chieftain as the iron fists of the British Army. It features a more powerful engine, rated at 1,200 hp, and improved protection thanks to its Chobham armor.

The Challenger main gun is a 120mm L11A5 smooth bore cannon able to strike targets 3,200 meters away. The secondary armament consists of two 7.62mm machine guns, one coaxial ant the other on the turret. The Challenger is powered by a Rolls-Royce CV12 diesel engine rated at 1,200 hp. The combat-proven Challenger was deployed within the British Amy in 1983 and destroyed more than 300 Iraqi armored vehicles during the Gulf War in 1991. Currently the Challenger 1 is being replaced by the more powerful Challenger 2 main battle tank.
