Description: The K1 Main Battle Tank (MBT) was developed in the 1980s by Hyundai to meet the requirements of the Republic of Korea Army based on the United States Army M1 Abrams tank. It features a 105mm main gun coupled with a coaxial 7.62mm machine gun and a commander's 12.7mm machine gun. Besides, low-profile, compact, armor protection, and high mobility make the K1 a very survivable battle tank. About 1,500 K1 tank series have been procured by the Republic of Korea Army between the late 1980s through 2010.
The K1A1 is an upgraded version of the proven K1 main battle tank featuring a 120mm L44 smoothbore main gun and new armor plates achieving greater lethality and survivability. The 120mm gun with 32 rounds provides increased range and penetration power in armor over the K1's 105mm main gun. Besides, the K1A1 also features hunter-killer capability through a commander's panoramic sight, improved laser rangefinder and gunner's thermal sight and a new ballistic computer for improved performance. The Republic of Korea Army will have procured 484 K1A1 tanks by the end of 2010. The K1A1 tank will be replaced at the production line by the advanced K2 Black Panther when enters mass production by 2010/2011.
