Description: The K1 Main Battle Tank (MBT) was developed in the 1980s by Hyundai to meet the requirements of the Republic of Korea Army based on the United States Army M1 Abrams tank. It features a 105mm main gun coupled with a coaxial 7.62mm machine gun and a commander's 12.7mm machine gun. Besides, low-profile, compact, armor protection, and high mobility make the K1 a very survivable battle tank. About 1,500 K1 tank series have been procured by the Republic of Korea Army between the late 1980s through 2010.

The K1A2 is a tank upgrade project being developed by Hyundai Rotem between 2008 and 2010 with mass production expected to take place after 2012. The new tank standard focuses on improved performance to meet the requirements of future battlefields. The K1A2 upgrade includes automatic commanding control, active defense system with soft-kill weapons against missiles and rockets and air conditioned. The automatic commanding control consists of identification friend or foe (IFF), position recognition (GPS + INS), digital wireless communications, and display. The K1A2 project will provide upgrade kits to the existing K1 and K1A1 tanks operated by the Republic of Korea Army and Marines.
