Description: The K1 Main Battle Tank (MBT) was developed in the 1980s by Hyundai to meet the requirements of the Republic of Korea Army based on the United States Army M1 Abrams tank. It features a 105mm main gun coupled with a coaxial 7.62mm machine gun and a commander's 12.7mm machine gun. Besides, low-profile, compact, armor protection, and high mobility make the K1 a very survivable battle tank. About 1,500 K1 tank series have been procured by the Republic of Korea Army between the late 1980s through 2010.

South Korea started the development of the XK1 tank to counter North Korea's armored superiority due mainly to the T-62 tank. Its development was also influenced by the non-availability of M60A1 tanks. The K1 was also intended as the Korean counterpart to American and German M1 and Leopard 2 main battle tanks. It is powered by a 1,200-hp diesel engine developing a top speed of 65 kph on road and 40 kph cross country. It is equipped with a 105 gun with 47 rounds as its primary armament and 7.62mm coaxial machine gun and a 12.7mm machine gun as secondary armament. The tank's crew comprises four persons: gunner, driver, commander and loader. The Republic of Korea Army and Marines have procured 1,027 K1 tanks between the late 1980s and year 2000.
