Description: Leopard 1 is a heavyweight Main Battle Tank (MBT) developed for the Army of former German Federal Republic. Originally Leopard 1 was a joint program between France and Germany, but ultimately France left the program in favor of AMX30. More than 2,200 Leopard 1s were procured by the German Army and 3,000+ tanks were produced for international customers. Production started in the early 1960s and ceased in 1979.
Leopard 1 is fitted with a stabilized 105mm cannon as primary armament, steel armor, an 830-hp diesel/multi-fuel engine, and two 7.62mm machine guns as secondary armament. In addition, Leopard 1 features NBC protection and an improved sight system. Overall, Leopard 1 was deemed the better western tank of those equipped with 105mm gun. Germany also developed recovery, engineering and bridge layer armored vehicles based on Leopard 1 tracked chassis.
