Description: The Marder is an infantry fighting vehicle designed to transport dismounted infantry to the battlefield. The crew consists of driver, gunner and commander along with up to six-infantryman. It offers protection and fire support to dismounted infantrymen thanks to the 20mm Rh 202 machine gun and a coaxial 7.62mm machine gun. The Marder can be equipped with Milan anti-tank missiles and other weapon/missile systems such as Hot, Roland and TOW.

The Marder 1 armored carrier achieved initial operational capability in 1971. The Marder 1 A1 variant entered service in 1979 and was followed by the improved models Marder 1 A2 in 1984 and Marder 2 A3 in 1989. The Marder 1 A5 is a mine protected variant that entered service in 2003, 74 of these vehicles are being procured by the German Army through 2005.

The Marder was developed to meet the requirements of the German Army for troops armored transport complementing Leopard 1 and Leopard 2 main battle tanks. The production of the Marder armored vehicle started in 1970 and the latest version, Marder 1 A5, entered service in 2003. Currently, the German Army plans to begin replacing Marders with the new Puma armored vehicle in the 2005-2010 timeframe.
