Description: In the early 1970s Swiss MOWAG company designed and developed the Piranha amphibious multipurpose armored vehicle as a private venture. The Piranha vehicles feature high survivability, high mobility due to the use of wheels, low life cycle costs, high reliability, high availability, and easy maintenance. The first prototype rolled off the MOWAG factory in 1972 and the first production unit was ready in 1976. In February 1977 MOWAG received the first order from Canada for 350 Piranha II 6x6 vehicles in three different variants. That order was increased to a total of 491 vehicles.

The Piranha II available on 4x4, 6x6, and 8x8 chassis are the second generation of Piranha vehicles. These vehicles can fulfill numerous roles and mission requirements though its modular design. It can accommodate a wide range of one and two-man turrets to fulfill different mission profiles such as personnel carrier, NBC reconnaissance, transport, command, ambulance, recovery, and mortar vehicles. The gun calibers suitable for Piranha II vehicles are from 0.5 inches (12.7mm) to 90mm. The Piranha vehicles have been deployed in conflicts and peacekeeping operations. Several thousands of them are in service today in armed forces all over the world.

The Canadian Armed Forces Armoured Vehicle General Purpose (AVGP) program included the delivery of 491 in three variants called: Cougar, Husky and Grizzly. The Grizzly was an infantry carrier, the Cougar was an infantry fighting vehicle fitted with a 76 mm turret and was used by Armored Corps forces and the Husky was a recovery vehicle. As of 2010, only the Husky remains in service with the armored forces of Canada.
