Description: The T-80 is a Main Battle Tank (MBT) designed to engage enemy armored vehicles, troops, fortifications and low-flying helicopters in day/night and all-weather conditions. It was developed on the basis of the T-64 tank. Its advanced fire control system jointly with the 125mm 2A46M smoothbore main gun ensure target kill with the first-round while the T-80 is on the move or stationary. To achieve improved survivability over preceding Soviet MBTs, the T-80 features multi-layer armor with integrated Explosive Reactive Armor (ERA) providing direct-hit and top-attack weapons protection. Low acoustic, visual, radar, and visual signatures also provide improved survivability to the T-80 MBT.

The T-80U MBT features a GTD-1250 gas turbine engine, a 125mm 2A46M-1 smoothbore main gun capable of launching a wide variety of tank ammunition as well as anti-tank missiles, a coaxial 7.62mm machine gun, and a 12.7mm anti-aircraft machine gun. The 2A46M-1 gun features an autoloader system which allows the T-80 to be operated by a crew of 3. That gun provided a rate of fire of 7-9 rounds per minute.

The T-80U entered service with the Soviet Army in 1984. The T-80UK is a command and control version of T-80U featuring improved survivability and improved communications. The T-80UM2 Black Eagle is the most advanced version of T-80U MBT produced to date featuring improved armor, survivability and equipment. The T-84 designation is applied to a specific version produced for the Army of Ukraine. As of 2016, Russia plans to upgrade 3,000 gas turbine-powered T-80 tanks to a new standard featuring the combat effectiveness of the T-90AM.
