Description: The Japanese Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF) Type 96 replacement is an 8x8 wheeled armored vehicle designed to counter an island invasion force carrying up to 11 infantrymen. The new armored vehicle being developed by Komatsu Limited under a $41 million contract features a 20-ton weight, a 500-hp engine and a top speed on road of 60 miles per hour (100 kph). The vehicle advanced armor design is designed to withstand a wider range of explosives and projectiles. The JGSDF is expected to field the new armored vehicle beginning in 2019. The Type 96 Replacement program is aimed at countering the military capabilities of China. Komatsu unveiled this new armored vehicle in early January 2017 while the JGSDF was carrying out field testing.
