Description: The Aegis Ashore is a ground-based missile defense system (GBMDS) based on the US Navy's Aegis (Aegis Afloat) weapon system deployed onboard destroyers and cruisers. The system builds on Aegis BMD 5.0 standard and has been developed by Lockheed Martin for the US Navy and the Missile Defense Agency (MDA) under the Ballistic Missile Defense (BMD) initiative. The Aegis Ashore utilizes a command and control station along with a re-locatable deckhouse to operate in a land-based environment. The first Aegis Ashore live firing test is anticipated in 2014 with the first operational system to be deployed to Romania in 2015 as part of the United States' European Phased Adaptive Approach. The Aegis Ashore will use the Standard Missile SM-3 Block IB, IIA and IIB anti-ballistic missiles (ABMs) as its primary weapons. So far, the United States is building two more Aegis Ashore missile defense systems with the initial operational capability slated for 2015.

In 2014 some unofficial reports placed into question the reliability and effectiveness of the Aegis Ashore missile defense system and the SM-3 interceptor.
