Description: The TOS-1 Buratino heavy flame thrower system is a multiple launch rocket system (MLRS) designed to destroy enemy positions by burning down its fortifications using waves of pressure. The weapon system is based on the T-72 tank chassis equipped with a rotating launcher mounted on the turret with an ammunition capacity for 30 (3x10) rockets or 24 in early models. The 175 kg rocket can hit targets at ranges at ranges from 400 meters to eight kilometers. The TOS-1 Buratino weapon system was introduced in the 1980s by the Soviet Army in Afghanistan. In the 1990s, the Russian Army deployed the TOS-1 in Chechnya in support of irregular warfare (IW).

The TOS-1 Buratino can deliver its full load of 30 rockets in seven seconds. Each ammunition has a double effect incendiary and thermobaric. The carrier vehicle based on the T-72 chassis results vulnerable to firepower from helicopters and other tanks. It is very maneuverable to withdraw rapidly from the battlefield to backward positions. It was not mass produced due to its limited firepower and weapon maximum range in comparison to other MLRS such as Smerch for operation in conventional military conflicts. The TOS-1A Soltsepek is an upgraded version introduced by the Russian Army in 2009 and featuring 24 (3x8) unguided rockets with a maximum range of up to 6 kilometers.
