Description: The Denel Dynamics Umkhonto Ground-based Launcher (GBL) is a versatile, compact and mobile surface-to-air missile system intended to counter multiple near-simultaneous attacks from fixed- and rotary-wing aircraft and missiles. The weapon system consists of a combination of eight Umkhonto Block 2 and/or Umkhonto-R missiles plus the RSR-320 radar system, developed by Reutech Radar Systems, which provides mid-course guidance updates to get the missiles within range of their infrared seekers. The 7-ton system fits into a single 6-meter long container that can be loaded onto a single 8x8 truck system. This integrated air defense system has been developed entirely in South Africa. The new missile system is being developed for the Phase 2 of South African Army's Ground Based Air Defense System (GBADS) program. The Umkhonto GBL conducted its first live fire test in October 2013 with all the objectives achieved successfully.

The system has been designed to be airlifted by a single airplane such as C-130 or a heavy lift helicopter. This palletized system can operate either alone in a fixed-position on the ground or loaded onto an 8x8 vehicle integrated with network-centric command and control (C2) systems. The missiles are put in vertical layout by an erector mechanism which also allow for rapid and easy reloading.
