Description: The US Army XM1299 is a new generation 155mm self-propelled howitzer (SPH) developed in the basis of the M109A6/A7 chassis but featuring new key elements to compete with the latest Chinese and Russian designs. BAE Systems started work in the new howitzer under the M109A8 designation but the program was re-named as the XM1299 in 2019. The XM1299 features a new turret, new 58-caliber 155mm gun (XM907) instead of 39-caliber in the M109A7, and new ammunition handling system with a crew of four-man. The new gun is expected to increase the range of conventional artillery shells to 50 kilometers while the XM1113 rocket assisted projectile (RAP) will hit targets at 70 kilometers. Besides, the new gun automatic ammunition handling system allows a maximum rate of fire of 10 rounds per minute. Multiple Round Simultaneous Impact (MRSI) capability will allow hitting a target area with up to eight 155mm projectiles at the same time. For self-defense purposes, the XM1299 will be fitted with a roof-mounted 12.7mm machine gun and a 40mm automatic grenade launcher both controlled remotely. The M1299 SPH is expected to achieve initial operational capability within the US Army in the 2023-2025 timeframe along with a new re-supply vehicle.
