Description: The Indian Navy Sukanya class offshore patrol vessels were built to conduct surveillance of India's Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) armed with two 40mm guns. Besides, they can serve for towing and firefighting missions at sea. The first three ships were built in Korea by Korea Tacoma, now Hanjin Group, and the remaining ships in India between the 1980s and the early 1990s. These large patrol boats can be upgraded with heavy weaponry in the event that India gets involved into a conflict turning them into light frigates/corvettes. The propulsion system consists of two diesel engines developing 12,800-bhp and a top speed of 21 knots. The Sukanya class vessels include an aft deck and hangar for one Chetak helicopter. The Indian Navy commissioned seven hulls with the Indian Coast Guard commissioning three more.
