Description:
The Julang 2, also known as JL-2 and CSS-N-4 Giant Wave, is a Submarine Launched Ballistic Missile (SLBM) designed to be installed onboard current and next generation Chinese nuclear-powered ballistic submarines. It evolved from DF-31 road mobile ballistic missile. It could be armed with up to 4 90 kilotons yield nuclear warheads, despite it was designed for a single 1 Megaton yield warhead.
The JL-2 ballistic missile retains the intercontinental range of DF-31 and the propulsion system. According to estimated Chinese strategic submarine fleet, the total number of JL-2s procured by the Chinese Navy could be less than 100 units.
