Description: R-29, SS-N-8 Sawfly Western designation, was the first Submarine Launched Ballistic Missile (SLBM) developed in the Soviet Union featuring an intercontinental range greater than 7,000 kilometers. The ballistic missile consisted of a two-stage design fuelled by liquid propellant. It was equipped with a single nuclear warhead. R-29 ballistic missiles were provided to Project 667B (Delta I) and Project 667BD (Delta II) strategic submarines.

In addition to its intercontinental range, R-29 missile was provided with countermeasures and a computer-based guidance system combining stars position and inertial system for improved accuracy. In the late 1970s the Soviet Union introduced the improved R-29D featuring a range in excess of 9,000 kilometers. R-29D was provided to Project 667BD boats and replaced the R-29 model on Project 667B submarines.
