Description:
The RSM-52 is a submarine launched ballistic missile designed to carry 10 nuclear warheads. These missiles were deployed aboard the Typhoon-class nuclear-powered strategic submarines of the Soviet Navy in the 1980s. Each Typhoon submarine carries 20 RSM-52 ballistic missiles. The RSM-52 is the Soviet counterpart to US Trident I SLBM.
The SS-N-20 ballistic missiles will remain in active service until the Typhoon submarines have been retired from service by 2010. An improved version of this missile named the SS-N-28 was under development to replace current SS-N-20s but its future remains uncertain.
