Description:
The Shahab-3, "shooting star" in Farsi, is an Intermediate Range Ballistic Range (IRBM) developed by Iran with a maximum range greater than 1,300 kilometers. It evolved from North Korea's No Dong ballistic missile and may be deployed by Transporter-Erector-Launcher (TEL) vehicles. Before 2004 Shahab-3 range was estimated around 1,300 kilometers but this figure was surpassed in 2004 following new missile tests that demonstrated a missile range of 2,000 kilometers which was confirmed in 2005 by Iranian officials.
Iran's Armed Forces are deploying Shahab-3 as a deterrence weapon aiming at Israel and carrying conventional payloads of up to 1,000 kg. To date, Iran has been unable to provide a nuclear warhead to its Shahab-3 missile. It is not clear which maximum range has the Shahab-3 production missile deployed by the Iranian Armed Forces.
