Description: The Project 955 or Borey is a new strategic nuclear submarine class (SSBN) designed to replace current Typhoon, Delta III and Delta IV submarines in service with the Russian Navy. Each boat will carry 12 Bulava-M advanced ballistic missiles. The Borey-class submarines are the quietest produced ever in Russia and the Soviet Union. It has been suggested that ships from Project 955 and the Project 855 (formerly Project 885) will share parts and hull design to achieve lower maintenance costs and higher spare parts availability as well as other benefits.

The Russian Navy plans to procure up to 12, some sources suggest 16, Borey-class submarines through 2020 with the first boat - named "Yuri Dolgoruky" - commissioned by 2008. According to Russian press, each Borey-class submarine will carry 12 Bulava sea-launched ballistic missiles (SLBMs) armed with four to six nukes and most important outfitted with anti-missile defenses (ABM) equipment. Bulava or Bulava-M ballistic missiles are said to have up to 10 nuclear warheads. The missile range is 8,000 kilometers.

The Project 955 lead ship, named "Yuri Dolgoruky", was laid down on November 2, 1996. On March 19, 2004, the second Borey-class boat, named "Alexander Nevsky", keel was laid down at Sevmash shipyards to be commissioned in 2008. The third submarine of the Borey-class, named "Vladimir Monomakh", was laid down on 19 March 2006. The lead ship left Sevmash shipyard and was handed over to the Russian Navy on April 15, 2007.

All the submarines are being build by Sevmash shipyards in the White Sea region, Russia. The Russian Navy plans to procure up to seven submarines through 2015 and an eighth boat between 2015 and 2017. According to Pravda newspaper, these boats will remain in service with the Russian Navy's strategic submarine fleet until 2040/2050 timeframe.
