Description: The GBU-28 is a special bomb developed for penetrating bunkers located deep underground. The are modified tube of artillery with an added laser guidance package, the same used on the GBU-27 bomb. The GBU-28 fulfils the requirements of the US Air Force for penetrating Iraqi bunkers located deep underground during the Gulf war in 1991. The GBU-28 can penetrate more than six meters of concrete or more than 30 meters of earth.

The GBU-28 bunker-buster or GBU-28B/B weapon system armed with the BLU-113 penetrator warhead has been employed during Desert Storm (1991) and Enduring Freedom (2002) military operations, over Iraq and Afghanistan respectively.

Raytheon's GBU-28C/B or Enhanced Paveway III (Enhanced Paveway IU?) is a further evolution of GBU-28 featuring an improved guidance system and BLU-122 warhead. The guidance system was enhanced through the addition of GPS-aided navigation system while retaining laser guidance. The 5,000-pound class BLU-122 warhead provides improved lethality and penetration over the previously BLU-113 warhead. GBU-28C/B will be integrated on US Air Force F-15E and B-2A Spirit aircraft.

In October 2005 the US Air Force awarded Raytheon a contract covering 140 GBU-28C/B guidance control units and tail kits production under Lot 2 effort. The contract was valued at $18.5 million and was scheduled to be complete by May 2007.
