Description: The SCALPEL is a low risk, affordable small weapon system developed by Lockheed Martin to offer military customers with precision engagement while minimizing the potential for collateral damage in close air support and urban environments. The SCALPEL weapon system is based upon proven Paveway II Enhanced Laser Guided Training Round (E-LGTR) airframe. The small weapon system is being developed to be employed on the F-16, F/A-18, AV-8B, medium and large Unmanned Air Vehicles (UAVs), and international aircraft platforms. Lockheed Martin performed the first SCALPEL flight test at the Naval Air Warfare Center Weapons Division China Lake test range in California in May 2008.

The 100-lb SCALPEL weapon is fitted with a semi-active laser seeker achieving two-meter Circular Error Probable (CEP) and can be equipped with either kinetic or blast-fragmentation warheads. Lockheed Martin is developing the weapon to be used seamlessly with the Sniper XR advanced targeting pod or other FLIR systems.
