Description:
The EGNOS (European Geostationary Navigation Overlay Service) is geosynchronous satellite constellation designed to provide positioning corrections and integrity information over Europe. The EGNOS constellation supports both United States GPS and Russia's GLONASS military global positioning systems. The purpose of EGNOS is to make both positioning signals suitable for safety critical applications such as civil aviation or ship navigation through narrow channels. Typically, GPS and GLONASS provide a positioning information with 10 meters Circular Error Probable (CEP), through EGNOS that figure may get downgraded to two meters.
The EGNOS system consists of three satellites and several networked ground stations which broadcast a navigation signal throughout Europe and its neighbor countries. The project has been driven by the European Space Agency (ESA), the European Commission (EC), and Eurocontrol, Europe's organization for safety of air navigation. The project is the precursor to Europe's Galileo global navigation system which is slated for entry into service well into the next decade. EGNOS achieved pre-operational status in 2005 and is expected to get ready for safety-of-life applications during 2008.
