Description:
The US Navy UHF Follow-On or UFO satellite constellation was introduced in the 1990s replacing UHF satellites providing a communications network serving ships at sea (primary target) an other fixed and mobile US military terminals. According to US Navy plans, UFO constellation would be replaced by MUOS communications satellite network beginning in 2009.
The UFO satellite is based on commercial Boeing 601 spacecraft adapted for military users through the addition of UHF (Ultra High Frequency) and EHF (Extremely High Frequency) payloads. The latest satellite of this kind, the UFO-11, was launched in late 2003.
The UFO network transmits data at a rate of 2-5 Mbps.
