Description: The Hornet, also known as Wide Area Munition (WAM), is a smart, autonomous, top-attack, anti-armor munition. It employs seismic and acoustic sensors to detect, classify and track a target. Once the target is within 100 meters radius, the Hornet launches a lethal submunition over the target. The submunition employs an IR sensor to determine target position firing an explosively formed penetrator (EFP) warhead downward which hits at the top of the armored vehicle.

The Hornet can easily be hand-emplaced or dropped from a vehicle on flat or sloped terrain. It can be armed manually using safe separation time settings or by remote control for up to 60 days. The self-destruct mode can be preset to an specific date or using the remote control.

The Hornet weapon will be used by the US Army to protect areas, forces during early entry, stop enemy penetration, reduce enemy mobility, protect perimeters, and reinforced exposed flanks during offensive maneuvers. Future improvements will allow the Hornet to be turned on/off/on via remote control, communicate with the battlefield controller via two-way radio, provide its exact position through an embedded GPS, and to be relocated prior to final arming.
