Description: The Lightweight Small Arms Technologies (LSAT) is a family of machine guns designed to fire cased telescope small-caliber (5.56mm or 7.62mm) ammunition. Textron Systems has developed the new machine guns and the United States military intends to get these high pressure assault rifles to fight future wars. The high speed ammunition fired by the LSAT is intended to engage infantrymen equipped with the latest body armor at ranges of up to 600 meters. The US Army was considered the purchase of LSAT machine guns in early 2018 as the replacement for 8,000 M249 squad machine guns and M4 carbines as the Next Generation Squad Automatic Rifle (NGSAR).
