The gun provides rate of fire ranging from 4,000 to 6,000 rounds per minute and places a controlled dispersion of projectiles in the path of the target. The M61A2 gun has been designed to provide 250,000 shots through its entire life. Currently, the M61A2 20mm gun is in production for the US Navy's F/A-18E/F Super Hornet multi-role aircraft.

On 27 July 2005, General Dynamics was awarded a $10 million contract for the production of 42 M61A2 20mm guns in support of the F/A-18E/F fighter aircraft with deliveries completed by January 2007. The contract was part of a multi-year procurement that could extend through 2010 for up to 183 M61A2s.
