Description: The Mk 110 Mod 0 naval is a variant of Bofors Defence AB 57mm Mk 3 weapon which is currently in service with 15 navies worldwide. The Mk 110 program began in September 2003 when Northrop-Grumman awarded United Defense a $79 million letter contract for production and ship integration engineering support of the 57mm Mk 3 naval gun for the US Coast Guard's Maritime Security Cutter - Large (WMSL).

At first, the Bofors Defence/United Defense intermediate caliber weapon received the EX-57 Mk 3 designation. In January 2004, the gun system was designated the EX 110 Mod 0 following a US Navy request. At the same time, the live fire test program using 3P (Pre-fragmented Programmable Proximity fuzed)) family of ammunition began at the Naval Surface Warfare Center in Dahlgren, Virginia. Ultimately, the gun system has been designated the Mk 110 Mod 0 and the original Swedish 3P ammunition will be designated the Mk 295 Mod 0 in the United States of America. The Mk 296 Mod 0 is the target practice (TP) ammunition used on this weapon system.

In October 2004, the Mk 110 naval gun was selected as the DD(X) baseline design Close-In Gun System (CIGS). Mk 110 aboard DD(X) destroyers are expected to provide ship self-protection and attack capabilities against a wide range of threats at short ranges. The specific number of Mk 110s to be deployed on each DD(X) destroyer has not been released yet.

In November 2004, Lockheed-Martin selected Mk 110 naval gun system and Mk 295 intelligent ammunition for its flight 0 Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) to provide ship's self-defense capability. In August 2005, Northrop-Grumman ordered a second 57mm Mk 110 gun to be integrated on the US Coast Guard's National Security Cutter (WMSL). The third WMSL Mk 110 gun was ordered in October 2006 and scheduled for delivery in July 2007. The Mk 110 was also selected for integration into the US Coast Guard Offshore Patrol Cutter (OPC).
