Description: The RBS70 is an all-weather, day and night, very short range air defense system (VSHORAD) for use by dismounted infantry or integrated on armored and non-armored vehicles. Until September 2011, this weapon system had been ordered by 18 countries worldwide with more than 1,600 launch posts and more than 17,000 missile rounds produced so far. Australia and Finland have placed significant firm orders for this system in the recent years. The first generation RBS70 was introduced in 1978 followed by the second generation in 1982 and the third generation in 1990. In 2003, Saab introduced the fourth generation incorporating the Bolide missile, non-cooled laser designator, a thermal imager and digital IFF as well as other enhancements. A further version known as the RBS70 NG was introduced by Saab in September 2011.

The RBS70 NG (New Generation) modular missile system has been designed with a new sighting system, high precision and non-jammable laser guidance to achieve improved performance and deliver world-leading capabilities in combat. The NG weapon system features: automatic target tracking; integrated high resolution thermal imager offering 24/7 availability; visual target assignment; simplified aiming functions; simultaneous detection of several targets; built-in video, and all-target capability using Bolide supersonic missile. The new sight can be operated remotely as part of a ground based air defense network. The RBS70 NG is fully compatible with all previous generations of the RBS70 missile. Utilizing the Bolide missile using a shaped charge and pre-fragmented warhead can take out a wide range of airborne targets such as fixed- and rotary-wing aircraft, cruise missiles, unmanned air vehicles (UAVs), armored combat helicopters (AH-64) and close air support airplanes (A-10) as well as armored personnel carriers (APCs). The new missile system also includes improved training devices.
