Description: The RS556 is a 5.56 45-caliber modular assault rifle intended as the replacement for the G36 rifle within the German Armed Forces by 2019. It is based upon the STM556 assault rifle developed and unveiled by Steyr Mannlicher in 2012 and is compatible with the IdZ-ES infantry fighting system. The RS556 assault rifle was developed between Steyr and Rheinmetall and features adjustable short-stroke gas piston system and rotating bolt. The barrel is 406mm long and can be easily exchanged by other barrels up to 500mm. With the 30-round magazine the rifle weighs 4.2 kilograms. The adjustable length lightweight stock clicks into seven different positions to match the operator's needs. The RS556 can be fitted with a variety of NATO accessory rails such as daylight optics, night vision devices or laser modules. A 40mm grenade launcher can also be mounted on the RS556 assault rifle.
