Description: The Sapan, Slingshot in English, is an electromagnetic rail gun developed by Turkey capable of firing metallic projectiles at hypersonic speeds. The Sapan gun has been able to fire projectiles at speeds of Mach 7.5 and is expected to reach Mach 8.5 in the near future. The Turkish Navy plans to build eight Istanbul, also known as TF2000, class frigates beginning in 2022-2023 and they are expected to mount a fully functional version of the new Sapan rail gun. The Sapan was first tested in 2014 which ended in failure and tested successfully in November 2018. The new rail gun is expected to become operational in the 2020s.
