Description: The Thor is a modular dual mode, standoff ordnance neutralization system combining a high-energy laser with an M2 12.7mm machine gun mounted on a stabilized pedestal developed by Rafael. The Thor weapon station also incorporates day/night sighting sensors. The main purpose of this weapon system is to provide mine and improvised explosive device (IED) neutralization in support of military forces on the ground. In addition, the remote control weapon station's 12.7mm gun may be used in hostile forces engagements at visual ranges.

The Thor directed energy laser is capable of rapidly clearing unexploded ordnance and defeating IEDs by inducing a low-order burning or deflagration reaction in the explosive fill at significant, safe stand-off ranges. The high energy laser may be used to ignite combustible materials, as a standoff cutting torch, and for other combat purposes as well. The Thor weapon station has been successfully deployed by the Israeli Army's military combat engineers.

In October 2006, Rafael and General Dyanmics Ordnance and Tactical Systems signed a licensing agreement to provide Thor to US defense customers. Through this agreement the Thor may be integrated on manned and unmanned ground vehicles employed by the US military.
