Description: The XM25 is a 25mm air-busting, semi-automatic assault weapon developed to specifically to defeat enemies protected by walls, dug into foxholes, or hidden in hard-to-reach places. It is effective against point, area and defilade targets out to 2,300-ft (700 meters). The weapon system was designed for optimal performance at 300 meters but can perform at 500 meters and beyond. It suits in all conditions including complex terrain and Military Operations in Urban Terrain (MOUT) that has been envisaged as the most likely scenario for the Global War on Terrorism. ATK started the development of the XM25 air-busting gun system in 2003. In late April 2005, ATK delivered the first six XM25 prototypes to the US Army for field-testing and evaluation. The US Army conducted the first operational testing in Afghanistan in November 2010. As of late 2010, the current plan calls for the procurement of 12,500 XM25 rifles starting in 2011.

The programmable high-explosive, air busting ammunition (M203) responds to the weapon's target acquisition/fire control system which makes extensive use of ballistic computation. The XM25 advanced target acquisition/ fire control (TA/FC) system uses a laser rangefinder and the TA/FC provides an adjusted aim point. The solider places the adjusted aim point on target and pulls the trigger. The target information is transmitted to the chambered 25mm round. Once fired the round measures the distance traveled and bursts precisely at the preprogrammed point in the air. Actually, it does not require impact to detonate. This high-tech rifle can take out targets behind walls and protected inside buildings with the 25mm ammunition detonating either in front, behind or above the target killing the enemy. The 25mm ammunition has the same blast effect than a hand grenade.

The US Army intends to use XM25 weapon system's extreme lethality and high effectiveness in urban warfare to eliminate threats with reduced collateral damage. Literally, this weapon system counter defilade target engagement system makes harder for hostile forces to hide in enclosures or inside urban fortifications. The US Army will deploy the one XM25 gunman in each infantry squad and special forces team.
