Description:
The Garibaldi is a lightweight aircraft carrier designed to accommodate helicopters and AV-8B Harrier V/STOL aircraft thanks to its spacious flight deck. It can perform anti-submarine, anti-surface and land attack operations while providing command and control in support of the Italian fleet.
The frontal section ski-jump ramp has been provided to facilitate Harrier aircraft take off operations. The Garibaldi's weapon system consists of Teseo, Albatros missile systems, and 3 Dardo close-in weapon systems. The Teseo missile system provides additional long range anti-ship capability to the Garibaldi aircraft carrier. The Albatros short/medium range surface-to-air system (SAM) protects Garibaldi carrier against airborne threats.
The Garibaldi aircraft carrier entered service with the Italian Navy in 1985 becoming Italian fleet flagship.
